Top 5 Ways to Supercharge your Google Ranking and Increase Your Traffic

When it comes to boosting traffic to your website, there’s nothing more important than getting your SEO right, and delivering quality organic visitors straight to your door. But without paying an SEO agency hundreds or thousands every month – how do you boost your Google ranking?

There are so many Google ranking factors – in fact, well over 100 – so I’m breaking down my Top 5 ways for small business owners to Supercharge their Google ranking, and ultimately increase your quality traffic. Win/Win!

Website Structure

Providing a clear and well-structured website for Google to crawl is essential. It allows Google to easily understand what your site is offering, what’s included, and knows that the user is going to have a positive experience when visiting your site as everything is organised in a user friendly format.

The best way to achieve this is by categorising your content in a logical, and easy-to-navigate way. Also, don’t forget to submit your sitemap to Google through Search Console when you make any changes – or are about to launch your site – this keeps your information up to date for Google.

Keyword Optimisation

This one is no secret – integrating keywords that are relevant to your business is one of the main ways you can attract the right customer to your website. There are a few fundamentals to be aware of:

1. Seamless integration – no Keyword stuffing!

Gone are the days where you could crowbar in all of your keywords anywhere on your website, and pull in organic traffic. Your keywords need to be integrated seamlessly into your content in a way that is easy to read, authentic, and most importantly relevant. You need to write your content with people in mind, not Google. If it’s not easy to read, and clear to a person, it won’t rank well on Google.

2. Do your research

Traffic is useless unless it’s the right traffic. So it’s well worth your time to do proper Keyword Research. Do the hard yards, and it will pay off in dividends when it comes to organic traffic. Coming up with 3 or 4 Primary / Core Keywords as well as 5-10 Secondary Keywords will make sure that the traffic coming to your site is more likely to convert, and more relevant to your business. It’s better to have 10 users a day that are your target market, than 1,000 who are not.

3. On Page and Off Page

Utilising your keywords in the right places is just as important as choosing the right words. Whilst the content visitors read is important, so is the placement of your keywords in the back of your website – including your Title Pages, Headings, URL’s and Meta Descriptions.

Your website platform will have SEO sections where you can enter the Title and Meta Descriptions for each page – so make sure you are incorporating your Core/Primary Keywords here as well as within your URL’s – Google will have an easier time understanding what your page and content is about, and will improve your ranking.

4. Internal Linking

When using your keywords within your content, link to different pages throughout your website where that keyword is relevant. For example, if you are writing content on a page about Men’s Clothing – and you mention that you sell T-Shirts, Sneakers, and Jeans. Link each of these products to their respective pages. This bolsters your authority and relevance, and again, will improve your ranking.

5. Alt+Text

Google also reads the images on your site, so adding relevant Keywords in the Alt+Text of all of your images improves the readability, authority and ranking of your site.

Relevant & High Quality Content

You should always be writing the content on your website with the user in mind before all else. Don’t write for Google, write for your ideal customer and you will be rewarded. Google is only getting smarter, and is focused on putting the user intent first and foremost. They want to ensure that when a user does a search, they get what they are looking for straight away. So keeping your content relevant to the page, your services and products, and brand is crucial. If you are using keywords that are not relevant to your products or services, people will leave your site straight away and Google will mark you down for this.

In short – keep your content unique, valuable, relevant and updated.

Backlinks & Authority

Google doesn’t just rely on your content to factor your relevance and the potential positive experience for its user – they also look at your authority. The best way to improve this is through backlinks. Having other trustworthy websites link back to your content/website is one of the strongest ways you can boost your rankings, as it tells Google you have authority in your field.

Think of it as a vote of confidence, that Google definitely takes note of.

User Experience

You can be forgiven for assuming it only matters where you appear in search results – and all that happens after that doesn’t affect Google. But unfortunately that’s not the case. The experience a user has on your site significantly impacts your ranking, as I’ve mentioned Google wants users to have a positive experience and if they’re sending people to a site that has a poor user experience, it will mark you down for this.

So what does it look at? Things like conversion rates, the time a user spends on your site, and the bounce rate. Make sure you have a website that is optimised and has a positive User Experience, as you can be doing everything right for your SEO – but if you website is not optimised you will lose your ranking potential, and all of your SEO efforts will not work.
