You’ve decided to bite the bullet and get yourself setup on Google Ads – but have you then sat with a blank stare when Google asks you for your monthly budget?
One of the most common questions I’ve been asked is ‘how much should I spend on Google Ads?’ It can be an overwhelming platform to say the least, and if you’ve ever hesitated about how much, or how little you could, should, or will spend – you’re definitely not alone.
Finding the Google Balance
Spend too little and you won’t be competitive enough to bid, or will hit your spending cap pretty quickly each day, resulting in very few clicks, and fewer conversions, if any.
On the other hand, spend too much and you seriously risk overspending on a campaign that is not optimised yet. If there’s one thing Google can do well it’s spend your money, so when you’re just starting out you want to get the balance right – and ensure you’re getting enough data to make a good call on what your monthly spend will be moving forward.
What’s the Magic Number?
There’s one approach that has always worked for me. Dip your toe in the water, let Google learn about your brand and your campaign, and then assess your future budget from there.
How does this translate to dollars and cents? Well as a general rule of thumb, I recommend my clients kick off their Google Ads campaign with a total monthly budget of $500.
This is the perfect amount to give you enough of a spend to remain competitive, without your money going haywire and not working for you effectively.
When you first start your Ads, Google takes a few weeks to learn your campaign, study the response from those searching, and to trust your website is relevant, offering a good user experience. Any issues on this front, which most people find there is, you’ll be able to find them without having spent more money than needed.
$500 is the perfect amount to give you enough data to tweak and optimise your campaign.
Google Ads Management ServicesOne Month Later…
Once the month is up Google has gotten to know you, and your campaign will have a rhythm. Then you make the adjustments you might need to make. For example, you might need to tweak your ad copy if you find you are getting the wrong people through to your website, or add some keywords if Google notices a gap in your campaign
Don’t forget, throwing money at Ads is not going to instantly make you more sales – find out what you need to know before spending any money on Ads.
If you’re nervous about spending $500 on ads, that’s understandable! Especially for a small business, where every dollar is placed carefully. But remember, when set up correctly, Google Ads have the potential to give you a return of anywhere between 2-4 dollars for every $1 you invest.
